miraculous rescue of film that was too far gone

A 16mm telerecording (kinescope) had been left in Nigeria and was so old that it had slowly turned to a film can full of toffee. But an xray scanner can still reconstruct the frames.
(It was found by Phil Morris when he recovered 9 or 10 missing Doctor Who episodes.)
And for the thinkers: the audio had been recorded by someone at home with a line-out on his TV on reel to reel tape. Obviously the optical audio on the film itself could never have been recovered to anything useful enough.

There is no reason why this should not work for 35mm movies as well.

Morecambe and Wise: Rescuing a 'lost' film

An old BBC broadcast of Morecambe and Wise from 1968 has been restored using a groundbreaking new technique.

Once thought unsalvageable by experts, the badly damaged old film was scanned using X-rays, then an algorithmic reconstruction method was used to digitally reconstruct the images.

Now they have 30 seconds of restored film which can be seen for the first time in decades.

At an autopsy conducted by critics, those same powerful x-rays and algorithms
could not locate any laughs in the body of this film:

Well, that’s critics for you in any case.

Posting an alert in case someone finds any footage whatsoever of Morecambe and Wise being funny.
