Still trying to find an Avatar

Unread post by Gagman 66 » Sun Jan 11, 2009 7:26 pm

:o OK, so where do you folks find such tiny, yet sharp, and clear images to post as your Avatar's? :? No matter how I try, I can't find anything that is small enough to meet the minuscule requirements that are allowed.

If I shrink an image, it quickly becomes an unrecognizable blur. So where do I find quality images that can be used here, with such dinky little boundaries as we are limited to here on this site? :(

Well, you just have to pick something that's clear and simple enough that it will shrink well, I guess. If you have things like that and they're getting blurry in the shrinking, something's funny with your photo program, I guess.

Mike,

:( No, There is nothing wrong with the software of any kind. It is just that the images are already as small as you can get them. You can't just keep shrinking them and shrinking them over and over. Do so and you can't tell what they are anymore.

I'm not following what this means.

If the images don't shrink well, pick others that do. Most headshots should.

Jeff - Somewhat reiterating what Mike said, you need to use a simple image in order for it to reduce well. Choose one with a single prominent feature - a face, for example - rather than a scene that has a lot going on. The latter has too much detail and can't be compressed enough to retain it. Bold design is going to come across better than intricate detail.

:( It's just no good. Even if I Shrink the tiniest images that I can find they are still way to big to post as an Avatar. I have never had an Avatar here, or on Silver Screen Oasis, because of the limitations.

:? On some sites I can use any photo I want as an Avatar, no matter the size. It just makes a thumb of the photo.

Post the image that you are trying to use here and we'll shrink it for you.

Danny,

:D Cool! Thanks a bunch! I was going to use Marion Davies, Renee Adoree, or Colleen Moore, but that's OK. The Gilbert photo looks good. Incidentally, how do I know you??? Beg pardon, but I know several Dan's and Danielle's! Are you one of those??? :?

Finally made one for myself while I was at it....

You're welcome, Jeff. I can do a different one if you prefer. I don't believe we've met outside of Nitrateville; I've seen your posts on Silver Screen Oasis but I don't think I've ever posted there.

Danny,

:) No, that's fine. Nice to meet you. Your Fairbanks Avatar looks great by the way! Has to be the Worst Silent film score ever to BEYOND THE ROCKS! Yikes, I am cringing! I have the DVD, but didn't remember the music being this bad. I recalled it being bad enough though. Much of it sounds like an old Mike Hammer episode or something! Stacy Keach anyone? :P

Another way of doing it is to find a picture site with thumbnails, and save the thumbnail rather than the image it leads to.

I prefer animated avatars, but it's hard to find/create ones that don't get irritating after a while. These are some that I have used:

Mike, I think that the part of your site needing a major upgrade or overhaul to ensure that the clear installation of members' Avatar photograph to be installed in their profiles very clearer without any glitches or hitches whatever. I have had no success to install mine since joined Nitrateville five years ago. :(

I try to post a different avatar photo of Mark Hamilton every other month.

My experience is to put the jpg photo on Windows Photo Viewer and instead of going to "paint" and rotating the photo and cropping the vertical and horizontal dimensions to meet the avatar dimension requirements, try to take the clear centered photo and just reduce the photo via "resize" to than the existing size. Shrinking the image will still keep it centered and clear for details.

Gertrude Brooke Hamilton is on imdb.com

Silencebound, yours is 147x147. Max size is 120x120. If you resize it and try again, it should work. If not let me know.

I did it at 120 x 120 px but it won't upload to my avatar profile. What then ? :(

I just now resized and temporarily uploaded your proposed avatar and it worked.

Edit: I've now removed it.

Well, when something works for everybody except one person, the odds are not that the board itself is broken. Sometimes there's just something you're getting wrong, sometimes your local internet provider has some weird firewall issue that blocks whatever you're trying to do. Sometimes there are gremlins.

I will contact you by DM with a solution.

The 120x120 pix of Rene Lantini is published successfully in my Avatar profile by Mike. Thank you very much, M ! :D
