A virtually forgotten name from Hollywood's so-called Golden Age...
I recently came across this charming interview (from 1974, a few years. before his death) which I thought I would share with you all:-
The website gives full biographical details but while it states (in line with numerous other websites) that Zádor "fled" to America after the Anschluss, I cannot find any confirmation that he was a Jew.
Does anyone know?
He lost a number of relatives during WW2 including his aged parents, but resolutely. refused to discuss the subject.
He also shared a similar fate to Eric Zeisl in Hollywood, hardly ever receiving screen credit for his work at MGM though the website lists the films he partly scored.
Friendly with Berg, Stravinsky, Korngold, Rozsa and especially Bartok, he is almost totally forgotten now, although there has been a series of fine recordings which seem to underline his own quip about his style being "half-way between La Traviata and Lulu"!
