I'm happy as always to contribute. However, it might be better to start a fresh thread that one of the administrators can nail to the top.

This is now a "sticky" topic and will stay at the top until the Kickstarter is finished.

I like the idea of mostly-complete things of value being given a proper release. David Shepard thought that it wouldn't work unless it was London after Midnight...here's the acid test.

Just contributed .

Looking forward to this one to see if goal with kickstarter met, how the production flows, and of course if another film like this one can be of interest to the public.

I kind of wish that Kickstarter wasn't needed for releasing silents with decent scores; I'm really happy that it exists. If this is what it takes to get silent films restored and released: so be it, I guess.

Ed, how come the costs on this one are so much lower than your earlier kickstarters?

CUZ.

Most costs are fairly static. Copy from LOC can range from cheap to on high. This one was on the low end plus postage costs will likely be lower since I assumed there would be less interest.

Also, the higher you set your goal, the more the possibility of not making it. It's all or nothing with Kickstarter. I try to break even at the least.

"Eyes of the Totem" had a kickstarter goal of $25,000 and ended up having 397 backers and reached that goal in 2015 within 60 days. Of course, the project was through MOMA and our local county historical society, so many more factions were involved. Kickstarters come in all shapes and sizes. The alternative is a big financial commitment from a smaller group of folks. Keep up the good work!

Dana

PS I spoke with the historical society contact person and the 35 mm nitrate had to be purchased from MOMA as well as rights to the film; hence, the higher costs involved on kickstarter for this project even though post kickstarter there was also legal fees to make sure that before publicly shown there were no rights infringement.

The biggest variables for me are the cost of the composer and the actual cost of the LOC copy.

If they already have a digitized copy of a restored film, it's pretty cheap (as things go) but if they have to do a new scan, it can get pricey (about $1,000 more). And of course postal charges keep going up, disk copying has almost doubled.

Rob Stone says he might be able to do a new scan for April Folly since the copy I got was from a 1989 scan. We shall see.

$90 to go. I'd say that the missing reel isn't an issue.
