NEW KICKSTARTER PROJECT: DVD of 2 SILENT HORROR FILMS

Unread post by andrewesimpson » Wed May 03, 2017 2:13 pm

Hello, Nitrateville colleagues!

I am excited to announce a new Kickstarter project to bring two silent horror films to DVD, with my new organ scores, for the first time! Here is the link with a descriptive video and more information:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/77 ... a-silent-f

The first film is WHISPERING SHADOWS (1921, dir. Emile Chataud), which comes from an original 28mm print at the Library of Congress (thanks Rob Stone!). The second is THE DEVIL'S ASSISTANT (1917, dir. Harry Pollard), from a 16mm at USC's Hugh M. Hefner Moving Image Archive (thanks Dino Everett!),

The goal is to raise 3,700 in 15 days: we are on day 2, and it is already 32% funded!

Please visit the page and forward to contacts who may be interested.

Thank you!
Andrew Simpson

Andrew's scores can be heard on Ben Model's Found at Mostly Lost disc. Happy to support this!

Andrew, I'd like to understand why you chose the two-week window for funding. When other Nitratevillains -- and I'm afraid you are one now, willy-nilly -- set up Kickstarter funding projects, they usually choose the 30-day option.

It's well over half funded in two days. It'll probably be fully funded before the week is out. Stretch goals, anyone?

Time may be of the essence. You have to remember that whatever window you choose for your campaign stands, even if the project funds in one day. After it closes, Kickstarter takes another 2 weeks to actually send the funds to your bank, so a 2-week campaign still takes 4 weeks to fund.

I think your points are valid, Ed, but I am trying to understand Mr. Simpson's reasons. Perhaps because of the trial I am on, I am making a particular effort these days to differentiate between facts and speculation.

I'm in; looks like a good one though I've not seen either of these films. 2/3 funded so moving right along! I see it was just x-posted to the Classic Horror Film Board so that should bring a bunch more.

I'm assuming these are DVD-Rs, right? Will there be coverart for the June release?

Hello, all, and thank you for your support! The response has been great so far: 77% funded right now!

Bob, to answer your question about choosing the two-week window. This is my first Kickstarter campaign, and I spent a good deal of time reading Kickstarter's guides on how to put a campaign together. Their observation (presumably based on ample experience) is that shorter time frames tend to be more successful for getting funded than longer ones. Naturally, there are longer campaigns which are regularly funded, but I thought it would be a good idea to follow their suggestion. Ben Model, who has done several of these, as you know, also recommended a 2-3 week window. So, the decision was pretty much based on experienced advice.

best,
Andrew

Responding to battra92: Yes, there would be cover art for the June release to backers! (Boxed similarly to other Undercrank DVDs)

Circling back, battra92, to your DVD-R question. I checked with Ben Model who says that the discs are -R but he can't recall if there is a + - option. Will find out and get back to you.

This is wonderful. I saw "Whispering Shadows" last year and both it and Andrew's score left a deep impression on me. I presumed I'd NEVER see it again. Now my wife can finally see it and I can enjoy it again. Backed. Thanks Andrew.

I must confess, I contributed twice, second time enough to get the DVD - these two silent films really do sound great and well worth it.

Congratulations!

So Burn on Demand like Warner Archive. I assumed as much. Unfortunately with these small runs it has to be.

BTW, will contribute when I get the chance. :)

Yes, replication involves pressing 1,000 units. These releases will not come close to half of that over several years. +/-R discs on demand is the (economical) way to make niche-within-a-niche-within-a-niche titles available.
