Win Doug Fairbanks in The Half-Breed from Kino Lorber!

Win one of Douglas Fairbanks' rare flops!

Okay, stick with us here. Seeking to expand his acting range, the newly minted action star played a half-native American in a serious western in 1916, The Half-Breed, directed by one of his top collaborators, Allan Dwan. And... it turned out that wasn't the Doug audiences wanted to see in 1916.

But it's a really good film, and having been restored with the help of the Film Preservation Society, started by Tracey Goessel (whose Fairbanks bio is out now in paperback), it's coming out from Kino Lorber on May 1—together with another 1916, Allan Dwan-directed, Fairbanks western, The Good Bad Man. Here's more details:
The Half-Breed/The Good Bad Man
Cast: Douglas Fairbanks, Jewel Carmen, Alma Rubens, Sam De Grasse; Directed by Allan Dwan

In an attempt to brand himself as a serious actor, the smiling swashbuckler Douglas Fairbanks starred in THE HALF-BREED (1916), a Western melodrama written by Anita Loos and directed with flair by Allan Dwan. Fairbanks stars as Lo Dorman, who has been ostracized from society because of this mixed ethnicity - his Native American mother was abandoned by his white father. When Lo catches the eye of the rich white debutante Nellie (Jewel Carmen), he becomes a target for the racist Sheriff Dunn (Sam De Grasse), who wants to break them up and take Nelli for his own. This love triangle becomes a quadrangle with the arrival of Teresa (Alma Rubens), who is on the run from the law. Through fire and fury Lo must decide who and what he truly loves.

DVD Extras Include:

-THE GOOD BAD MAN (1916), starring Douglas Fairbanks and directed by Allan Dwan (50 minutes)
-Amazing Tales from the Archives: Restoring The Half-Breed (1916)
-Audio commentaries for THE HALF-BREED and THE GOOD BAD MAN by Tracey Goessel and Robert Byrne
-Music for THE HALF-BREED and THE GOOD BAD MAN composed and performed by Donald Sosin
-Photo Gallery
You can see some clips from The Half Breed here at TCM; the quality is exceptional.

WIN YOUR OWN BLU-RAY OR DVD:

Kino Lorber's giving us three copies to give away (U.S. and Canada only). Entering the drawing is really, really easy: just post in this thread with the title of your favorite Douglas Fairbanks film. I'll draw three winners on May 4th.

What's my pick, you ask? Well, I really really liked A Modern Musketeer, another Fairbanks western, so I'm going with that.

(Oh, and did I mention Tracey Goessel? Whose Fairbanks bio is out in paperback now? You might want to keep an eye on NitrateVille Radio, too.)

I became very interested in The Half Breed when I saw this fascinating presentation at the SF Silent Film Festival about the film and the various incarnations it went through (and Tracy gets a very nice mention here).

And my favorite Fairbanks Sr film is The Mark of Zorro.

It's a tough choice between The Three Musketeers and The Mark of Zorro, but I think I'll go for the latter, simply because it has one of my favourite intertitles: "He's not a man! He's a FISH!"

Having seen the restoration of The Good Bad Man at the SFSFF I can confirm it's excellent. Particularly interesting if you're a fan of William S. Hart, as it seems very much like Doug's riff on Hart's screen persona. Tracey is doing us a real favour by getting these early Doug pictures out to a wider audience.

Because I have a beautiful original 16mm print, I have to choose The Mark of Zorro. However Thief of Bagdad is close.

Being someone who doesn't do drugs (and I know you don't believe my nuttiness is natural), I must pick Mystery of the Leaping Fish.

Not easy. But The Three Musketeers just edges out The Taming of the Shrew and The Last of Don Juan.
